Civil Engineering Tips and Tricks

Following are the basic civil engineering tips and tricks that every civil engineer must keep in mind.

  1. Lapping is not allowed for bars having diameter more than 36 mm.
  2. Chair spacing  : maximum spacing is 1 meter or 1 number per 1 square meter,
  3. Dowel Rods : Minimum of 12 mm diameter rod shall be used.
  4. Chairs : Minimum of 12 mm diameter bars should be used.
  5. Logitudinal reinforcement of not less than 0.8% and more than 6% of gross cross sectional area should be provided.
  6. Minimum bars for square columns are 4. For circular columns, minimum number of bars are 6.
  7. Main bars in slab should not be less than 8 mm (HYSD) or 10 mm (Plain bars) and the distribution not less than 8 mm and not more than 1/8th of slab thickness.
  8. Minimum thickness of slab is 125 mm.
  9. Dimension tolerance for cubes is +- 2 mm.
  10. Free fall of concrete is allowed to max of 1.5 meters.
  11. Lap slices not be used for bar larger than 36 mm.
  12. Water absorptions of brick should not be more than 15%.
  13. pH value of water should not be less than 6.
  14. Compressive strength of bricks is 3.5 N/mm
  15. In steel reinforcement, binding wire required is 8 Kg per MT.
  16. In soil fill as per IS Code, 3 samples should be taken for core cutting test for every 100 square meters.
  17. Electrical conduits shall not run in columns.
